Djiby Gueye born in Dakar- Senegal, better known by his stage name “Newyork”, is an American rapper. As a young kid, growing up in Senegal, Newyork witnessed the growth of Hip-Hop among the African Youth. His mother encouraged his music through the purchase of a boom box which introduced him all the latest music hits. Newyork spent most of him time either in school, or at concerts/music shows, where he got most of his energy from.
At the age of 12, his parents moved to the United States (Bronx, New York), in order for him to continue his education. He was young and in need of friends but his ability to create social relationships was hindered by the fact that he didn't speak a word of English. Newyork took it upon himself to learn English, and within a few months he was making strong progress. He started making friends in the neighborhood and was able to create strong bonds with them regardless of the cultural difference. At this point in time, his parents knew that he was ready to start school, and they enrolled him at the Booker .T. Washington Elementary school in Manhattan, New York. The learning experience at school was a great one for Newyork, however, his classmates constantly made fun of his accent, but this didn't stop him from doing what he had to do, which was – LEARN.
Growing up in the Bronx was tough for Newyork, but he remained a good kid, and concentrated on his music. He saw people freestyle at school and thought it was cool, so he'd watch them get ripped. He had a great sense of humor but needed to build his vocabulary in order to compete with the other kids. In high school, Newyork was still in touch with his cultural background and still very much in love with his music. He listened to Jay Z so much that his mother ended up knowing most of the lyrics.
Once Newyork turned a sophomore in high school, his family moved from the big city, to Cincinnati, Ohio. He was enrolled at Withrow High School. By this time, he had a Newyorker accent and dressed like a New Yorker, thus causing a high level of attraction at school. His classy style and “Newyork Swag” caused his classmates to confer upon him the nickname – NEWYORK.
While in high school, Newyork built a much stronger vocabulary and decided to join the rap game. He was a member of a rap group but that didn't work out due to the inconsistency of other group members. During this time, he met 2 of his friends who were seniors in high school – Ameth a.k.a Zeus, and Bamba a.k.a Fizzy. They had started a record label and were looking for new artistes to work with. He was hesitant at first, until he saw the level of dedication and passion that both producers had for their record label and music in general. Newyork hit the studio with Global Kats Entertainment and created a vast array of hits.
Today, Newyork has a few major hits, including his single “Lil Mama” featuring Ameera, as well as the club banger “Lean on em”. These songs are yet to air in the public media but are soon to become Global Hits!
